Our OxyContin® Law Practice
If you were prescribed OxyContin for a non-fatal medical condition and are now struggling with addiction to this powerful painkiller, you're not alone.
OxyContin is the brand name for an opioid narcotic that was originally developed as a slow-release pain reliever for patients with terminal cancer or severe chronic pain. The active ingredient in OxyContin (oxycodone) is the same one found in other well-known opioids such as Percocet, Vicodin and Percodan. OxyContin, however, contains a much higher dose of oxycodone than these other drugs because of its 12-hour time-release formulation.
When OxyContin was introduced to the market in 1996, it was hyped as a "wonder drug" in the fight against chronic pain. Recognizing the drug's potential, the manufacturer launched an aggressive marketing campaign, promoting OxyContin for a wide range of medical problems and claiming the drug was less addictive than similar painkillers. As sales took off, so did reports of abuse, addiction and even fatal overdoses.
These problems were brought to the attention of the manufacturer who dismissed them as isolated incidents involving drug abusers and teenagers. However the truth is that OxyContin is one of the most powerful opium-based drugs ever made available and many people who have no history of substance abuse have become desperately addicted to it.
In recent years, several government agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, The Drug Enforcement Agency and the General Accounting Office, have criticized the manufacturer of OxyContin for making unsubstantiated advertising claims and for minimizing the risks associated with this dangerous drug. The company also recently lost a patent infringement lawsuit when they were found to have deliberately misrepresented information about OxyContin to the Patent and Trademark Office.
Thousands of lawsuits, brought by people whose lives have been devastated by addiction OxyContin, are now pending against Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of this powerful narcotic.
