Our Silicosis Law Practice

If you were exposed to silica and are now suffering from silicosis, you're not alone. Silicosis is a degenerative lung disease caused by inhaling crystalline silica, commonly known as sand. This disease, for which there is no known cure, affects more American workers than any other respiratory illness. Exposure to silica is also associated with lung cancer, pulmonary tuberculosis, and other airways diseases. It also increases the likelihood of contracting certain autoimmune disorders, chronic renal disease, and others.

Silica dust is invisible and becomes airborne easily. It can be inhaled by workers who perform any activity that disturbs materials, such as rock or sand, that contain silica. And since the dust is very light and can travel through the air long distances, it is possible to be exposed even if you are not directly working with it. Smoking significantly increases your risk of developing silicosis.

The hazards of silica have been known for more than four centuries and its use was completely banned in Europe decades ago. Despite this knowledge and the example set by other countries, American corporations continue to use silica, exposing both their workers and customers to this dangerous substance.

Also at fault for exposing thousands of American workers to silica are respirator manufacturers who sold defective protective devices. Many respirators officially certified for use with silica dust failed to prevent inhalation of the harmful substance. Respirator manufacturers were aware of this problem but failed to correct it until recently.

In addition, studies have indicated that even at officially approved levels, workers still have a significant risk of developing chronic silicosis when they are exposed to silica over a working lifetime. Certain industries pose a particularly high risk.
