Vioxx ®
If you have suffered a heart attack or stroke as a result of taking Vioxx, you're not alone. Studies indicate that people taking Vioxx are four to five times more likely to suffer a heart attack and have a greater risk of high blood pressure compared with people taking regular pain medications such as aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen. Users also have a greater risk of stroke--high blood pressure itself is a common risk factor for stroke--especially when combined with a family history of stroke and/or with smoking.
The manufacturers of Vioxx have been reprimanded by the FDA for promoting use of the drug while minimizing its potential dangers.
Vioxx, now approved for use with chronic pain, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid
arthritis, belongs to a class of drugs known as COX-2 inhibitors. When
the drugs were introduced in the late 90's, COX-2 inhibitors were thought
to be safer and more effective than others NSAIDs such as aspirin and
ibuprofen. However, many studies now question that belief and support
a strong link between use of the drug and the formation of blood clots--a
major risk factor for heart attack and stroke--and have put the safety
of Vioxx and another COX-2 inhibitor known as Celebrex into a very controversial
light.
