Chattem Announces Court States Intention to Approve Final PPA Settlement
Chattem, Inc., a leading marketer and manufacturer of branded consumer products, announced today that a fairness hearing to consider final approval of the class action settlement which the Company previously reached in the phenylpropanolamine (PPA) litigation related to the Company's Dexatrim(R) brand was held in the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington before Judge Barbara J. Rothstein on August 26, 2004.

Results of FDA-mandated study gauging risk of stroke with PPA
FDA asked the pharmaceutical industry to conduct a study that evaluated the risk of hemorrhagic stroke from taking phenylpropanolamine. The drug was allowed to be marketed while this study was being done based on the previous recommendations of the expert panels.
